Imbali Visual Literacy

Why we are participating

The Imbali Visual Literacy Project is a pioneering arts education initiative based in South Africa, dedicated to nurturing creativity, visual literacy, and practical art-making skills among youth and educators. Founded in 1988, Imbali empowers individuals through hands-on creative learning in a supportive, inclusive environment, offering structured training programmes that combine technical skill development with critical and creative thinking. The project plays a vital role in promoting access to quality arts education, fostering self-expression, and contributing to personal and community development.
Imbali is involved in the Antidote project because it aligns with our commitment to creativity, sustainability, and community upliftment. By transforming fashion and other waste into beautiful designer pieces, the project reduces environmental impact, fosters innovation, and equips participants—many of whom are Imbali graduates—with valuable design and upcycling skills. It promotes collaboration, economic empowerment, and conscious consumption while demonstrating that sustainable fashion can be both expressive and desirable. At its core, the Antidote project embodies the spirit of collaboration and partnership that Imbali values deeply.
